Why the All Blacks will win the world cup

Hub 1 have been getting behind the All Blacks and creating songs, poetry, persuasive writing or explanations to support our team in the lead up to the Rugby World Cup.

Here is a practise paragraph we wrote in one of our literacy workshops

The All Blacks work out so hard that their calf muscles are rock solid and their thighs are hard like steel. The speed of the flash is nothing compared to the All Blacks. They workout so long that they never see the light of day. Lifting weights makes Richie McCaws biceps so bulging that you can’t even put your hands over them. Imagine being in a ruck with Richie McCaws hard hitting body. You will never forget him. Running up and down the field in weighted vests strapped to Sonny Bill’s chest holds him down. When he’s finally released, his chest pumps up and he sprints like he’s chasing a cheetah. The All Blacks are never held back in a tackle because of their super strong charge.

Learning in the Hall

The big move out has finally happened and we are in the hall. Surprisingly our new learning environment is great and we are enjoying learning together as one big class.

Please feel free to pop in and see how the hall and our learning looks.

Cross Country

Lochlan's cross country experience from a very bouncy Go-Pro. Very impressive to see he still had enough energy to dig it in for a sprint finish. Imagine being that Go-Pro!

SYSTEMS

In Hub 2 this afternoon we sorted and classified some images. Mid way through we stopped and asked ourselves, 'What do we know about systems? How do these images relate to systems?'

We figured out that a system has - a start (Input), a Process where things happen to the product, and a product (Output).

Input - Process - Output

We then asked the following questions.

That Was Summer by Danielle.

Have you ever smelt summer?

Sure you have.
Remember that time when we went down to the beach and the fish’n’chips were overpowering the salt in the sea.
And when we walked into the kitchen after a long day of playing outside and all we could smell was delicious roasted food.
That was summer.

Have you ever tasted summer?
Sure you have.
Remember when it was time to have a BBQ and you could not wait to dig into the perfectly cooked food that was roasted on the hot flaming BBQ.
And as we’d drink fizzy, sparkling bubbles would go up our nose.
That was summer.

Have you ever seen summer?
Sure you have.
Remember when it was Christmas and there was a mountain of food on the table.
And walking down the street and there was a forest of red all around from the Pohutukawa trees.
That was summer.

Have you ever felt summer?
Sure you have.
Remember that time when you were lying on the beach on a windy day and every now and then you would get a refreshing mist of salt water land on your body.
And how we would look silly because it looked like we were dancing, but actually our feet were burning because of the sand.
That was summer.

Pumpkin Day 2015

Pumpkin Day!!!

I chose this pumpkin because it is very creative.
I have never seen something decorated like this.
I think it looks very much like a real m&m to eat.
I like how they painted it the right colour.
____________________________________________________________________

I made mine look like a kiwi and a egg because I thought they were the right shape.  First I got some white paint and made some brown. Then I got two brushes and painted the smaller pumpkin white for the egg and the bigger one brown.  After they had dried I got some black and more white then I made the eyes. Next I went out onto the farm and got some sticks that looked like feet of a bird and put them under the kiwi. After I did that I pulled out some prickly hay and placed it under the little pumpkin then I was finished.

I like this one because it is something new. The part I like best is the hat is is very interesting because we have one like that and we use it for the fire.

I like this one because it is cute and funny. The part I like best is that Brody has made it look like mrs potato head.

An owl made out of a watermelon and rockmelon.

  • I like this pumpkin because I like owls and they are nice animals.
  • I like this owl because I have never seen one like this before.
  • I have one question for this person - how did you get the stuff to stick together ?
  • I like this pumpkin because the face is really detailed.

My First Swimming Competition by Lachlan

I was standing waiting for my race and I was nervous. I could smell my burning feet roasting on the hot concrete. We walk to the starting line, I get ready and I hear the starters beep.

The water was freezing so I raced to the end so I could get out in a hurry. Splashing was all I could hear. I could hear the sound of people motoring away as I go to take a breath. I see one person behind me then I hit the end. I came 5th. Not bad for my first event.

I go and sit down and eat my delicious lunch. I watch my buddy Hamish skimming through the water. He got first. I am happy for him. He was drenched and exhausted.

I go to my backstroke race and as we get ready I see the shimmering water. The starters beep goes my heart beating with excitement. The surface of the water splashing at me it was intense, the pressure was on. We hit the end I came 3rd I was happy. Then later Bradley came over from a race and gave me and jamie a big wet cold hug. The races were over after that.

Descriptive Writing

We have been working on our descriptive writing.
We are learning to use activated nouns, our senses and metaphors and similes to paint a picture for our audience.

We have been writing about summer this week (Check out Miss Drayson's Writing page on the class site for our writing inspiration)

Here are some opening sentences we wrote to show our audience it is summer time.

Sunblock melts down my arms as the pressure burns through my bones.

Just before the dew rose from the grass, the two brothers grabbed their home made wheelers and headed for the forest.
(what time of day is Jack talking about?)

sunblock melts down my arms like the cool river.

Keep an eye out on the blogs for the complete stories

I notice that more people in the class have blue eyes.
I wonder why not many people have hazel eyes?
I think Hazel is a very rare eye colour in room 5.

We were lucky enough to have a Rippa Rugby coaching session yesterday. We learnt about some of the skills we need and got to have a game as well.

What were some of the skills you need to play Rippa Rugby?
What was your favourite part of the session?

The Alaskan Town Where Most Residents Live Under One Roof!

Hello, my name is Summer and I have been reading the news today and came across this interesting article about the Alaskan town were most residents live under one roof.

I found it interesting because it was hard to believe that nearly the whole town live's in the same place and there is even a play ground and school inside.

I can relate to it because I have lived under the same roof with friends and family in a tent.

I wonder if one day they all move out and move to there own place.

Real Life Sleeping Beauty Summary by Larnie

Hello, my name is Larnie and I have been reading the news today and came across this interesting article about a 17 year old girl that has a virus that makes her sleep and sleep and sleep. The longest she has sleeped in for is 64 days (Click on the link below to see the full article).

http://www.dogonews.com/2012/11/26/rare-disorder-turns-pennsylvania-teen-into-a-real-life-sleeping-beauty
I found it interesting because no one can find a a way to help her stop her sleeping virus. Nicole has had this virus since she was 7 years old and she has had only 3 Christmas's in her life and she is 17 now!!!. She also sleep through meeting Katie Perry.

I can relate to it because I sleep in a lot and I love to sleep but she wishes she could have a normal life and I do have a normal life so we are differing in a way.

I wonder if there are more people have this virus and if some one will find a a way to stop it one day?
If you enjoyed Larnie's summary then please visit her blog at http://dsslmcmillan.blogspot.co.nz/2015/02/larnies-article.html and leave a comment.

Mrs Marks welcomes everyone to our Kowhai Team

I hope everyone had a relaxing holiday and enjoyed the long sunny days.
We look forward to an exciting term, especially with Port Waikato school camp at the end of the term.
Our Kowhai team will be working together in groups more often with opportunities to work with a different teacher at times.
We start swimming at the Town Pools in week 2 so it is important to bring your togs everyday.

Welcome from Mr Marks.

Welcome back to school and another action packed year at David St School. This year is going to be very exciting with camp happening in term one, as well as a different approach to teaching and how the Kowhai team work together to take full advantage of our learning time at school.

I hope everyone has enjoyed the sun and nice long break and is refreshed and ready to start the learning first thing Monday morning. I thought I would add a photo which gives a good insight into my holiday.

See you all soon.
